Steroid treatments and osteoporosis risk

Taking steroid medicines over time can cause your body to become dependent on those medicines, which can lead to you being unable to stop taking steroids without having a flare. If this happens, your IBD team will speak to you about starting another medicine, such as azathioprine, to help you stop steroid treatment completely. Interactions can change the way either medicine works, or cause unwanted side effects.

  • A high dose of inhaled steroids can sometimes cause more serious side effects but this is rare.
  • This can then reduce inflammation, which is one of your body’s immune responses.
  • Increased susceptibility and severity of infections with suppression of clinical symptoms and signs, opportunistic infections, recurrence of dormant tuberculosis (see section 4.4).
  • The dose of prednisolone may be repeated for children who vomit; but intravenous steroids should be considered in children who are unable to retain orally ingested medication.

The type of infections you are more at risk of depends on the type and dose of steroid medication you take. For example, steroid tablets and steroids given intravenously (into a vein) can make you more prone to developing infections such as colds, chickenpox, shingles and measles. If you take steroids for a long time, your body can start to get used to the changed hormone levels and having steroids provided.

Are there any reasons why I won’t be prescribed steroids?

A single course can consist of two to four injections usually over a hour period. Many of these side effect can be reduced by using a lower concentration of steroid solution and spreading it out evenly over the area with multiple injections of small volumes, using a very fine syringe. This technique of micro droplet steroid injection in my experience reduces the chance of this side effect to less than 5%. Steroid injections do not work for male or female pattern hair loss, telogen effluvium, advanced traction alopecia and other hair loss conditions which are not listed above.

When steroids are used long term, they may have marked side effects, including weight gain (particularly noticeable as a rounding of the face). That’s why doctors are particularly cautious about their use in children or young people. You usually take steroid tablets or liquids at set times each day for a number of days or weeks. It is important to make sure you know how long to take them for.

Topical prednisolone for UC and Crohn’s disease

This is most likely to be a steroid medicine called prednisolone. If you take your steroid preventer inhaler every day as prescribed, your airways will be less inflamed, and you’ll be less likely to react to your asthma triggers and have symptoms or an asthma attack. Your reliever inhaler (usually blue) opens up your airways when you’re having symptoms or an asthma attack. It does not contain steroids, so it cannot reduce inflammation in your airways.

Stopping your medication

Most steroid inhalers have low doses of steroid medicine in them anyway. Not all relapses need treatment as, in most cases, the symptoms will gradually improve on their own. They should explain the benefits and potential side effects of taking steroids so that you can decide together on the best course of action in your particular situation.

The ability of corticosteroids to cross placenta varies between individual drugs, however, 88% of prednisolone is inactivated as it crosses the placenta. The hypokalaemic effects of steroids for sale acetazolamide, loop diuretics, thiazide diuretics, and carbenoxolone, are enhanced by corticosteroids. The risk of hypokalaemia is increased with theophylline and amphotericin.

You can make a decision together based on the benefits to you and the possible risks to your baby. You might have blood tests during cancer treatment to check for this. If you have diabetes already, you might need to check your blood sugar levels more often than usual.

Serious health problems are more likely the longer you take steroids and the bigger the dose.
